Boot Polish
It was yesterday when I was heading towards Noida in a train. It was an awkward feeling returning to the Karmabhoomi after being spending a week full of leisure time at home with the family and friends. Nevertheless, the tension of pending projects also crept in. So, to lessen the guilt of not studying at all at home, I tried to read a research paper to pass time which we have to study for the OS term paper. As the time passed and more and more passengers boarded, my compartment was jam packed when the train crossed Moradabad. It is a regular scene in the Indian trains where many vendors try to sell their stuff to the passengers. That day was no exception. The packaged drinking water man, tea and coffee man, chips and biscuits wallah, chaat wallah and many others roamed about the compartment from time to time.

Then came a little boy of around 6-7 years of age. Wearing a shirt torn from n number of places and was dirty as hell, the shorts which were just managing to cover his necessary parts. It seemed his face and hair had not touched water for months. He was carrying an old, outworn bag and was desperately searching for something on the floor as he moved on. He stopped in front of an elderly gentleman and then I came to know what exactly he was looking for. He asked the gentleman to let him polish his leather shoes. The man like a true businessman inquired what he will charge for that. The boy replied Rs 5 for a pair. The man told him that he didn’t have change and so the boy moved on sadly only to return after half an hour and again asked him to let him polish the shoes. The boy told him that he had earned enough to return the change in case the man gives him a bigger note. Reluctantly, the man gave him his shoes and the boy, with his full heart and skill, polished them. After a lot of effort the shoes were polished and the boy handed them to the man and asked for his money. The man, looking at one of the shoes and pointed in an offensive and abusive language that it was not polished properly and demanded to re polish it in order to get the money for his labor. The boy with a sad and desperate look on his face took out his brushes again and was back to work. Finally after much hassle, the man paid him his due and the sad expression changed to the feeling of satisfaction.

Now the question is, all this labor, hard work and humiliation just for Rs. 5? Is it not unfair on the part of that little boy? In the age of attending school, and gaining knowledge he was forced to work and that too in such inhumane conditions. I was really startled to observe that. We all know these incidences happen on a regular basis in India but I realized it yesterday for real. I am not able to forget that sad and hungry look on the face of that little kid. Is this what we have achieved after 61 years of Independence? Only managed to offer lives of poverty, desolation, and humiliation to our next generation. I will not be surprised if that boy grow up and become a gangster and kill people for little money, or become a terrorist and plant bombs in the dustbins, or get killed in the tender age while falling from the train while attempting to remain stuck to the door. Can anybody give me the answer? Comments invited.

It’s really a touching article.

I can imagine the scene and feel the emotions. People face such situations daily but they have gone emotionless.

I think Garima these people are better than people working in air-conditioned offices!!!

There is a song in Raj Kapoor’s movie ” Boot Polish:”Nanhe-Munnein Bachhein Teri Mutthein Mein Kya,Mutthein Mein Hai Taqdeer Hamari,Humnein Kismat Ko Apnein Vash Mein Kiya Hai”

These children are the real victims of this system. Where the helping hand of Congress is and what policy will the so called Iron man (Advani) introduce for such children. Will any body make the another “Slum Dog Millionaire” for millions of such children?

Garima,in an urgency to shot a reply, you didn’t try to understand my comment.Interestingly, though you seem to confirm what I have said in my reply I still feel you have deviated away from actual meaning.Probably, you should have read between the lines !

What I am trying to say is that these people who are making money the hard way amid harsh realities of life are better than people hailed as high ’n’ mighty! These people are at least guided by shame and guilt. What about politicians and high officials who even after being found involved in corrupt practices have the guts to hail themselves as icons of virtue? I hope you remember Satyam fraud. That fellow (Satyam Chief) unashamedly accumulated money via wrong means for all these years.Compare him with Vidarbha farmers, who have committed suicide for inability to pay their debts.

I have nowhere suggested Garima that these children should try to emulate patterns set by big people.Since you have misunderstood my intentions, you don’t realize that in actuality I am honoring the ability of these children of lesser gods !!I am happy that even after facing the pinch and humiliation they are playing their part quite well as an upright and honest individuals !!

In what sense these children are better than the people working in the air conditioned offices? Should we ask these children to not to work and struggle for better life as you are living a better life (free of any tension). What do you think, all of us should live that better life?

I agree with your observations. But I feel that Congress and Left are the real culprits. You read the guiding principles of Left and you will find them to be concerned about downtrodden and poor people. But in actuality they are merely interested in power.About Congress, the less said the better. This party had once made eradication of poverty its chief goal. And the only thing that it has done in all these years has been introduction of culture of scams.

Yes, BJP too has nothing specific about common man.But they still can be given few more chances to prove themselves.

@ Arvind,
I really did not understand why did you mentioned that those kids are better off than people working in A/C offices.

Secondly, What exactly that song lyrics trying to depict in this context. Please specify.

Lastly, I did not get why you tried to politicize this issue. Why did a specific political party is to be blamed.

I don’t know but off late, from your replies on my different posts I am sensing that you are really frustrated by the surrounding things, be it elections, IPL, bollywood etc. I have no idea why it is so.

@Pratyush

Regarding you first query, I have answered that in Graima’s comment.

It appears that you have not heard that song. That song asks children to face the ironies of life without succumbing to lesser charms. That songs asks children to make most of the ironies of life.In other words, it’s an attempt to bring some sense of pride in lives of children tormented by the harshness of life.

Well,I have not politicized the issue.I hope you have read Lalit’s response. He has talked about helping hand of Congress!!

Regarding your last query, I just wish to say I am not at all frustrated chap.I am quite content and blissful. All those who know me on Instablogs and elsewhere know that fact quite well. Anyway,I am quoting once again lines from a songs. These lines will tell you why my stance is quite different from others :

Ya dil ki suno duniyawaalo ,Ya mughko abhi chup rahne do, Main gham ko khushi kaise kah do,Jo kahte hai unko kahne do !!

Don’t you think that politics is responsible for the plight of these children?
I agree to Lalit‘s view.

Arvind is blaming only Congress for this while other parties are equally responsible.

Vinit,
In my above comment I clearly mentioned ’a specific political party’ which practically means the same.

What your seeing is the humans opinion of nature’s lack of caring for an individual’s well being ,but nature wants the well being of the gens and nature doesn’t care who gets walked on -no matter what country
Each human is programed to get their gens to the top and most don’t care about others ,because if there are gens lower than theirs than that makes theirs seem more successful to nature
There is enough on earth to take care of all humans needs ,but because of our drive to be the top gens we will never share– so come on don’t be nature dizzy

Hi Pratyush

A very touching article depicting the reality of the world. However, I don’t think it has got anything to do with our independence. Actually, the real culprit is the deteriorating condition of emotion and compassion in human hearts.

The situation is not new; it was there since the world came into existence. Its the responsibility of the privileged section to think about the underprivileged lot, but ironically, we (at least a majority of us) are too engrossed in our own betterment to give a thought to other things and sometimes we go to the extent of putting our feet on these underprivileged shoulders to climb the ladder fast.

There are many authors who have written books on the lives of the downtrodden section of society. Many of these books have even become bestsellers and the authors have become millionaires, but... that’s it. Even they fail to acknowledge the subject of their books by distributing a small fraction of their earnings for the betterment of these people.

And... this situation will never change.

It doesn’t have anything to do with lack of emotion
There are more of us and news is in our face in an instant
The laws of nature are no different now than a 1000 years ago, but nature has so mutch blind control over her breeding humans that they will conduct their life as evolution demands
Aneez that’s how i see it, but respect and know why you see it the way of the majority –respect Wayne

We are pulling the same rope from opposite directions, Wayne.

You say,

nature has so mutch blind control over her breeding humans that they will conduct their life as evolution demandswe - (at least a majority of us) - are too engrossed in our own betterment to give a thought to other things

Study the two and spot the common thing.

Love you

I got your point and wasn’t trying to make light of your emotional concern for the unfortunate and wasn’t trying to diminish the plight of the poor because i felt it first hand myself
I was just making a generic statement about how nature makes us work and to change we would have to start over
I am just a voice in the billions on earth that makes a noise so low no one can hear it -be well and i do respect your sensitivity

Thanks for a touching description of the plight of the little boy. We Indians are supposed to be very sentimental, and we can perhaps prevent the boy from becoming a terrorist or an antisocial element, by opening out and sharing our feelings with him and empathising with him on the spot. The less is said of politicians, the better. Whom are they helping? You can only say they help themselves
